In today’s time, when electricity prices are rising and power cuts are still common in many parts of the country, solar energy is becoming a smart choice for Indian families. For lower and middle-class households, especially, it offers both relief from high monthly bills and a more reliable source of electricity. One such budget-friendly and powerful option is the 2kW solar system, which is now even more affordable thanks to the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

2kw solar system with subsidy

A 2kW solar system is made up of around 8 to 10 solar panels. These panels absorb sunlight during the day and convert it into electricity. This electricity can be used immediately or stored in batteries (if installed). This size is ideal for an average Indian family of 3–5 members. The best part is that under the government scheme, 2kW setups receive the highest subsidy of ₹60,000, making it one of the most cost-effective options available. While the full installation price is usually around ₹1,20,000 to ₹1,40,000, the subsidy brings down your actual cost to just ₹60,000 to ₹80,000, depending on the installer and region.

What Can You Run on a 2kW Solar System?

Many people wonder whether a 2kW system can power all their daily-use appliances. The answer is yes, with smart usage. A 2kW solar setup can easily run 10 to 12 LED lights and 5 to 6 ceiling fans throughout the day. You can also operate a medium to large refrigerator and a smart television without any problem. Devices like laptops, Wi-Fi routers, mobile phones, and tablets can be charged regularly without noticing any load on the system.

You can also use a washing machine two to three times a week, which is usually enough for a small family. During summer, a 1-ton inverter AC can also be run for a few hours, especially during peak sunlight hours, though continuous use may not be advisable without battery backup.

How Much Will It Cost After Subsidy?

The actual cost of a 2kW solar system ranges from ₹1,20,000 to ₹1,40,000, including panels, inverter, wires, installation, and structure. But thanks to the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, eligible homeowners can receive a flat subsidy of ₹60,000 on this system. That means your final out-of-pocket cost becomes only ₹60,000 to ₹80,000, which is a great deal for a system that can last up to 25 years with proper care.

In comparison, systems with more than 3kW capacity do not get a proportionally higher subsidy. Even if you install a 5kW or 10kW solar system, the maximum subsidy is capped at ₹78,000. That’s why the 2kW system stands out as the most value-for-money choice, especially for small and medium-sized families.
